Consular processing is the process by which individuals outside the United States (or inside the U.S. in certain circumstances) apply for an immigrant visa at a U.S. consulate or embassy. Once approved, you can enter the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident, also known as getting your “green card.”

Who Needs Consular Processing?

You may need consular processing if:

  • You are a family member of a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (spouse, child, parent, or sibling).

  • You are an employee sponsored by a U.S. company for permanent residence.

  • You are a winner of the Diversity Visa Lottery.

  • You have an approved immigrant petition, but live abroad.

  • You are the fiancé (e) of a US citizen.
